Public Enemy and Cypress Hill are teaming up to host a concert on January 15th on L.A.’s Skid Row to draw attention to issues such as homelessness. The ‘Occupy Skid Row’ event is being Chuck D and General Jeff, the Resident Representative for Skid Row who was a member of the hip hop duo Rodney O & Joe Cooley.
The free concert will feature performances from a number of artists including King T, The Dogg Pound, Mellow Man Ace, Sir Jinx, Kid Frost, the L.A. Posse and The Egyptian Lover. The event will go down between 1:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. off of East 5th Street and Gladys Avenue in downtown Los Angeles.
Following the performance, Chuck D. has announced his intention to continue the Occupy Movement by taking on radio stations in what has been dubbed ‘Occupy the Radio,’ which will aim to persuade stations to give more air time to local music. “Then we mobilizing occupy PROTESTS on radio stations for community, 25% artist takeback. There are only a few groups that own many,” Chuck D. tweeted.
The performance, of course, lands on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day which fits with a number of protests that have flown the flag of the Occupy Movement over the past few months. Last October, Cornel West and Raheem DeVaughn were arrested on the steps of the Supreme Court after participating in the Stop the Machine protest in Washington’s Freedom Plaza following the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at the National Mall.
