Jay-Z’s New York City Rocawear Office Undergoes Employee Layoffs

Post by Alex Stone, Jan 18, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Jay-Z SeatEverything is not sunny in the land of Jay-Z, as the rapper forced to lay off 28 Rocawear employees in these tough economic times.

Rocawear is a brand that had become synonymous with hip hop and rap culture over the years, and it looks like the brand may be facing some tough times. The clothing line has recently had to lay off 28 employees from the New York City Rocawear offices earlier this month on January 6th, 2012.

The listed reasoning for the layoffs was none other than “economic” problems. This comes as no surprise seeing the state of the current economy along with the fact that Rocawear has been on a slow decline over the years as hip hop fashion evolves and becomes more diversified.

If you recall, Jay-Z sold the Rocawear clothing line for a staggering $204 million back in 2007, but did keep interest in the company. Towards the end of 2011, Jay-Z rustled quite a few feathers when he released his controversial ‘Occupy All Streets‘ t-shirts to support the Occupy Wall Street Movement. The t-shirts were created for support, but Jay-Z was heavily criticized for attempting to capitalize on the situation.
